How Genomics Can Help Beat Your Cancer
Dr De Silva led one of Australia’s largest prospective genomic studies in
breast cancer as part of his doctoral research (PhD). The study recruited
more than 650 patients over three years across Melbourne’s major
tertiary cancer centres, including Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre, The
Royal Melbourne Hospital, and The Royal Women’s Hospital.
This work helped define how genomics can be used in real-world cancer care. It reduced unnecessary or potentially harmful radiation treatments, streamlined surgical decision-making, and gave patients greater clarity and confidence in managing their cancer.
The study was published in a leading Australian medical journal and became one of the most widely read and cited oncology publications that year. Dr De Silva continues to lead and contribute to research across tumour types, focusing on translating genomic insights into more precise, personalised cancer care.
